"gentle grieving" magazine
course work @ hochschule düsseldorf, 2023
About
„Gentle grieving“ is a pun with my last name but also the examination of the beauty within sadness. The magazine tackles different media forms and how topics of sadness can be experienced as positive or even desirable. Media consumers are often looking for happiness and entertainment. As research shows, more often, they are on the search for something that has an impact, that may move them, may make them think differently about something, feel something, learn something new. More important than fun, when consuming any type of media, is meaning.
These wishes can often more successfully be offered through heavier, emotional topics rather than a funny joke.
Sadness furthermore can be a strong foundation for creative output. Which, of course, was very interesting to me, as a creative person myself.
In the end I decided to combine my general research about the joy of being in a sad or melancholic mood and a glimpse as to how this joy is created in different forms of creative output, such as the TV, music or literature.
Many texts are directly taken from the internet, since the course's focus was on the layouting of a full magazine and not so much into generating the content for it. Still, I held two interviews and took it upon me to translate some articles from English into German, since I wanted to keep the language consistent without having to pass on impactful texts that I had found. The illustrations and hand-written elements are selfmade.
